Background

Joined Mitsui & Co. as a new graduate and worked primarily in the fashion industry for 18 years. At the age of 40, I changed careers and served as the president of a foreign brand’s Japanese subsidiary for three years. After that, I took on the management of the entire company as a candidate for business succession at Beams Inc. In April 2023, I enrolled in a graduate program at Kyoto University to transition into the tourism industry.

Business idea in short

Transformative Tourism Business Leveraging Japanese Culture and Spirituality

Social issue to tackle | Business concept

Japan’s true allure lies not in consumption but in its spirituality and culture, underpinned by history. Aim to create a new tourism sector that accurately conveys Japanese spirituality, transforming it into an industry that not only serves as a catalyst for regional economies but is also difficult to replicate outside Japan and sustainable for the future. This initiative represents a significant step toward achieving that goal.

Motivation

Cycling through the Shikoku Pilgrimage in 2022 provided significant insights into my own life and introduced me to the many charms of Shikoku. I was surprised to find that this pilgrimage is relatively unknown and underutilized, and I feel that this represents a significant missed opportunity for Japan.
